A Narrative Medicine WorkshopWith Lynne Mijangos and Nina Lorez Collins

Think of a poem, finally, as the home remedy for the ache of appetite. –Rachel Hadas

Spend an evening in the company of the fascinating young field of Narrative Medicine–which seeks to bring the practices of literature, listening, perspective-taking and cooperation to the experience of how we understand our bodies, in sickness and in health. “The key to sharing our health histories is to think of them as a story,” advises Sayantani Dasgupta, a physician and expert in this field of study. “Choose the turning points points you want to highlight–the ups and downs you’ve experienced over time. Who are the main characters? Who’s the supportive partner? The unsupportive boss?” In this workshop, we’ll reflect on our “health stories” in the context of a poem spanning birth and death.  We’ll discuss and write about sounds, images, longings and remembrances stirred by our reading–and in the course meet with a renewed appreciation for the intrinsic power of story to heal.

The workshop will be lead by Lynne Mijangos and Nina Lorez Collins, both recent graduates of Columbia University’s Narrative Medicine program and co-founders of Narrative Medicine Partners.

Students are asked to bring a notebook and a pen, and an interest in remembering something they thought they had forgotten.
